Chief Executive Officer, Professional Geoscientists Ontario (PGO)
Professional Geoscientists Ontario (PGO) is a self-regulatory organization governing the practice of professional geoscience in Ontario, reporting to the Minister of Energy and Mines. PGO is governed by a twenty-member Council and is supported by committees of geoscience professionals and a small, dedicated staff. PGO was created in 2000 when the Professional Geoscientists Act received Royal Assent on June 23, 2000.
PGO is seeking a Chief Executive Officer who will bring visionary leadership, strategic insight, and a deep commitment to public interest to this pivotal role. As the regulatory body governing the practice of professional geoscience in Ontario, the PGO plays an essential role in protecting the public, upholding ethical and professional standards, and ensuring the integrity of the profession.
The CEO will lead a dedicated team of seven and work in close partnership with Council, government, industry, and registrants to strengthen regulatory effectiveness, modernize operations, and respond to evolving challenges and opportunities facing the profession. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of professional geoscience in Ontario and elevate the relevance and impact of the profession in today’s complex environmental and economic landscape.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned, values-based leader with a strong track record of strategic leadership, operational excellence, and stakeholder engagement—ideally within a regulatory, professional, or membership-based organization. They possess a deep understanding of regulatory governance and the public interest mandate, and are skilled at navigating complex, multi-stakeholder environments with diplomacy and clarity. With exceptional communication skills, the successful candidate will be a credible and persuasive advocate for the profession, capable of building strong relationships with government, Council, registrants, and industry. They are a collaborative and empowering leader, known for fostering inclusive, high-performing teams and cultivating trust and transparency.
A background in geoscience or in an area related to regulatory organization management is strongly preferred. Eligibility for registration as a professional geoscientist in Ontario is a significant asset.
