Director, Internal Audit Canadian Blood Services
Ottawa, Toronto, Calgary
Canadian Blood Services (CBS) is Canada’s Biological Lifeline. The organization connects donors and patients, healthcare professionals and researchers, helping to save lives, restore health, and support patients across the country. Nationally responsible for a secure system of life essentials for transfusion and transplantation that is reliable, accessible, and sustainable, Canadian Blood Services plays a critical role in strengthening Canada’s health systems and earning the trust of Canadians every day.
Established in 1998, Canadian Blood Services is an independent, not-for-profit charitable organization funded by all provincial and territorial governments except Quebec and regulated by Health Canada as a biologics manufacturer. The organization is responsible for operating Canada’s national blood and plasma supply system, the national public cord blood bank, and a range of stem cell and organ donation and transplantation programs that support patients and healthcare providers across the country.
The Director, Internal Audit plays a critical enterprise leadership role in strengthening governance, risk management, and organizational accountability across CBS. This role will lead a modern, independent and co-sourced internal audit function that provides objective assurance and strategic insight across the organization.
The Director will develop and execute a risk-based audit program that enhances organizational resilience, supports regulatory and compliance obligations, and strengthens internal controls within a complex, national, manufacturing healthcare environment. As CBS continues to evolve and navigate increasing operational, technological, and cybersecurity risks, the Director will serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, executive leadership team, and Board, fostering a culture of continuous improvement while ensuring audit activities align with enterprise priorities and support the safe, efficient, and effective delivery of services for patients and healthcare partners across Canada.
Operating under a dual reporting relationship to both the Finance and Audit Committee of the Board for functional oversight, and administratively to the CEO, this role is the principal point of connection between Internal Audit, executive management, and the Finance and Audit Committee.
As the ideal candidate, you bring progressive leadership experience in audit and risk operating within complex, highly regulated environments. You bring deep expertise in internal audit, assurance, governance, and internal controls, combined with the ability to connect audit insights to broader organizational priorities and strategic objectives. An independent thinker with strong professional judgment and courage, you are comfortable engaging with senior executives and Board committees on sensitive and complex matters. You possess exceptional relationship-building and communication skills, enabling you to influence stakeholders while maintaining the objectivity and independence essential to the role. Strategic, collaborative, and solutions-oriented, you are motivated by purpose-driven work and energized by the opportunity to help strengthen a national organization that plays a vital role in protecting the health and well-being of Canadians.
